Beat the Defender
Develop Evasive Running Skills
Drill Aims
To develop the skill of evasive running and defence.
Coaching Instructions
The first attacker and defender must run around the end cones.
Afterwards the attacker must score a try using imaginative techniques
to avoid the defender such as side-stepping. The players should not
kick the ball. The defender should aim to stop the attacker from
scoring. After a player is tackled they should both join the back of
the queue. Players should swap between attacking and defending. Defence
should be done on both sides to encourage tackling on both shoulders.
Variations
See this drill Beat the Defender 2. The drill can also be done with the attackers in pairs or threes but the defenders should have one less player.
